Gleam
Gleam is a type safe language that compiles to Erlang.
It has a simple, modern syntax & functional features such as the pipe (|>) operator & pattern matching.
It has Elixir, Erlang & Mix interop. This means you can easily integrate Gleam code into an Elixir project, or use an Elixir library from Gleam. You can also use the same GitHub actions and deployment processes as Elixir.
The compiler is helpful & beginner-friendly, and behaves similarly to Elm's. It provides the safety of a language like Rust without having to wrestle with a borrow checker.
The language also compiles to JavaScript, making it suitable for deploying in Serverless environments.
Why Assess?
We are putting Gleam in “assess” because it still needs to prove its stability, as the first stable version was released a few months ago.
Another critical point is that while it fills an existing gap (lack of typing), Elixir is moving in that direction too. Elixir will probably be a gradually typed language forever, so the need will always be actual. Still, we are also fostering the use of Rust, which provides a complete type system, and it proved to be a solid solution to adopt for the time being.
